RETURN TO 711 WATCH

January 20th, 2005 - Commander Kevin G. Mooney temporarily relieved of command. The crew was called to muster on station and Captain Mooney said his goodbyes over the 1MC. "...It was my fault..." he said, proceeding throughout the boat and exchanging a handshake or word with every man. Unlike many in this day and age, he has chosen to follow the proud naval tradition of a commanding officer's ultimate and unrelenting responsibility. He refuses to dispute the Navy's assertion that he was in error. The true extent to which he might have averted the tragedy will be a matter of debate for many, many years to come.

Commander Andrew Hale assumes command of the boat.
